- Review pay rates and payroll budgets for the coming year
Ontario’s minimum wage increased to $16.55 on October 1. With this change and all the current uncertainty in the labour market, many employers are reviewing pay rates for key jobs to align with market and comply with ESA requirements. As you start your workforce planning and payroll budgeting for 2024, staffing companies like AES are a good source of market information to assist you.
- Ensure your team has taken or booked required 2023 vacation
Employers must ensure that all team members take their minimum annual vacation requirements under the ESA, and can schedule vacation for employees who have not yet used theirs. This month is a good time for managers and HR teams to review their teams’ vacation accruals for 2023, and to coordinate planned time off and coverage as the holiday season approaches.
- Update mandatory workplace policies for 2024
Many employers including AES find it a good practice to refresh and recirculate their mandatory workplace policies to all employees in the new year. If you plan to do this, it’s a good idea to review those policies now to make sure you have covered off all required policies, and to streamline existing policies to ensure they’re practical and accurately reflect your actual processes and operations. Required policies in Ontario for employers of a given size include:
- Workplace Health and Safety
- Workplace Violence and Harassment
- Pay Equity
- Disconnecting from Work
- Electronic Monitoring
